Historic Underpayment Update

March 26, 2026

We know many Beneficiaries have been waiting for an update on the historic underpayment process. The Gumala Trust Board approved the distribution of the $65 million historic underpayment to Beneficiaries in December 2025, and we are now preparing to open applications.

Applications will open in May, and the Gumala Trust remains on track for the program to begin on 1 July, as we have previously communicated.

When applications open, Beneficiaries will receive an email with a link and a clear step-by-step guide on how to apply. Preparing for this process takes time because we want to make sure the process is fair, transparent, and easy to follow. We appreciate your patience, and we are committed to ensuring every eligible Beneficiary has the opportunity to apply.

Funds will be available, in line with the Trust Deed, for support in the following areas, in line with announcements made last year:

Housing – Mortgage, deposit, rent or property repairs
Superannuation – Contributions to strengthen long‑term financial security
Hardship Relief – Immediate relief for unusual hardship or distress
Rental & Utility Assistance – Support to cover bills
Purchasing Card – For flexible everyday purchases

The Gumala Trust Board is working closely with GAC, as the Manager, to ensure full compliance with the Trust Deed throughout this process.

The Gumala Trust acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual, and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
