A new Advisory Group of Traditional Owners (AGTO) is being established by the Gumala Trust, as Trustee of the General Gumala Foundation, to strengthen the voice of Traditional Owners in decisions that affect the Foundation.
The AGTO will offer cultural advice to the Trustee when Beneficiary applications are being considered. This includes guidance on cultural obligations, kinship and family connections, genealogical links, and community context. The group will help make sure decisions are culturally informed and address community expectations. The Trustee will continue to be responsible for making all final decisions.
The AGTO will include up to five respected Traditional Owners from each of the Banjima, Nyiyaparli and Yinhawangka language groups (15 members in total). The Trustee will appoint members to the AGTO who have strong cultural authority and community knowledge, represent a wide range of family groups (avoiding close family relationships where possible) and be connected to the Yandi Land Use Agreement signatories.
The group will meet up to three times a year, with meetings held in Perth, the Pilbara or online. Sitting fees and reasonable travel arrangements will be provided at the discretion of the Gumala Trust.
